A Study on Smoking Status of College Student in Korea


Abstract
In order to know smoking status of college student, a survey was conducted for 1, 642 freshmen of two private universities in Seoul from 24 of August to 24 of September 1978. And the results were obtained as follows;
1. Out of 1, 642 male students, 66.1% of them w: is habitually smoking.
2. The rate-of smoking according to major field¢¥ of student was 62.8% (398 students) in liberal arts and social science and 68.2% (691 students) in natural science.
3. The rate of smoking by, the locality, in where student had graduated high school, was 67.2% (775 students) in Seoul and Busan area, 64.1%- (272 students) in other city area, and 59.4% (38 students) in Eup and Myun area.
4. The age distribution of first smoking was 10.2% at sixteen, 15.3% at seventeen, 27.9% at eighteen, and 34.9% at nineteen.
5. The school age of first smoking was 6.4% at junior high school, 36.67o at senior high school, 15. 6% after high school, and 41-.4% at college.
6. The distribution of student smoking year was 39.6% less than one year, 27.4% for two years, 13.
4% for three years, 6.9% for four years, and 12.7% for five years and over.
7. Number of days for smoking 20 pieces was 54.8% less than 2 days, 25.5% for 3-4 days and 19.7%
for 5 days and over.
8. Student favorite cigarette was Gubuksun or Sun (66.1%), Eunhasu or Hansando (31.4%), and Myungseung or Hwanhee (2.5%).
9. The order of motivation for first smoking was curiosity (30.3%), temptation of friend(30.2%), psy
chological frustration(18. 1%), friendship(12.27o), boredom(4. 77o), and superiority(4. 5/¢¥0) respectively. 10. The order of first smoking place was entertaining place(33.4%), one¢¥s home(23.3,lo), friend¢¥s or lodging house(13. 5Q, outdoors(9. 3Q), and educational institution (6.811o) respectively.
11. First smoking companion was friends (68.4%), alone (19.5%), and seniors (5.7%).
12. The rate of correct answer on the relationship between habitual smoking and lung cancer was 60.
6% in the smoking group and 80.152% in the non-smoking group.
13. The rate of correct answer on the tar substance containing in cigarette was 23.2% in the smoking group and 30.9% in the non-smoking group.

14. The rate of correct answer on habitual smoking and disturbance of brain function was 38.9% in the smoking group and 44.7% in the non-smoking group.
15. The rate of correct answer on the relationship between smoking and no-effect of fatigue relief was 1.0.4% in the smoking group and 17.6% in the non-smoking group.
